The Four Agreements & DJing
Don Miguel Ruiz’s “The Four Agreements” offers timeless wisdom that can profoundly impact various professions, including the dynamic world of DJing.
I rememebr when I first got the book and gave it to friends and, male & female, put it into practice. A friend’s mother created posters for each agreement and put them up in the house, wishing she’d read them years ago.
By integrating these agreements into their craft, DJs can enhance their artistry and navigate the industry’s challenges with resilience and authenticity.
Here’s each agreement and an example in our DJ world:
1. Be Impeccable with Your Word
This principle emphasises the importance of speaking with integrity and aligning words with actions. For DJs, this translates to punctuality, honouring commitments, and clear communication. Arriving on time and being reliable fosters trust with event organisers and audiences alike.
Story: DJ Harold Heath recounts an experience where a promoter, after consuming alcohol, took over the decks during his set. Despite the unprofessionalism, Heath maintained his composure and professionalism, understanding the importance of upholding his own standards regardless of others’ actions.
2. Don’t Take Anything Personally
In the music industry, feedback can be both uplifting and discouraging. Understanding that others’ opinions often reflect their own experiences and biases helps DJs maintain confidence in their artistry.
Story: A-Trak, a renowned DJ, faced numerous challenges and rejections early in his career. Instead of internalising negative feedback, he focused on his passion and skills, eventually leading him to significant opportunities, including working with Kanye West.
3. Don’t Make Assumptions
Assumptions can lead to misunderstandings and missed opportunities. DJs should proactively seek clarity regarding event details, equipment specifications, and audience expectations. This ensures they are well-prepared and can deliver performances that resonate.
Story: SUAT, an innovative DJ, emphasises the importance of clear communication and understanding audience dynamics. (I won’t say anything, but watch him on Youtube!)
By not assuming what the crowd wants, he tailors his sets to engage listeners effectively, setting himself apart in the industry.
4. Always Do Your Best
Consistency and dedication are key. Recognising that one’s best effort can vary daily, DJs should strive to prepare thoroughly, practice diligently, and adapt to each unique performance setting. But there’s also a matter of doing best for others. This isn’t a solo sport.
Story: Chapter & Verse, who achieved prominence later in life, attributes his success to relentless effort and maximising every opportunity. By consistently doing his best, he overcame industry stereotypes and built a successful career.
By embracing these agreements, DJs can cultivate a mindset that enhances their professional journey and enriches their personal growth.
